About the Artwork
Painted during the height of Strudwick's mature period, this work demonstrates his evolution from the earlier Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood toward a more decorative and symbolist approach that would influence the emerging Arts and Crafts movement. Created in 1895, the painting reflects Strudwick's fascination with medieval romance and his belief that art should provide spiritual refuge from industrial modernity. The artist's painstaking layering technique, which could take years to complete a single canvas, achieves an almost enamel-like surface that sets his work apart from his contemporaries. A Story Book was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1896, where critics praised its technical mastery while noting Strudwick's unique position as both heir to Pre-Raphaelite idealism and precursor to the decorative arts revival that would define the turn of the century.
