How It's Made

About the Artwork

Audubon began working on this plate during the early years of his field surveys across the Louisiana and Mississippi territories, a period of acute financial difficulty that he transformed into one of the most productive documentary enterprises in the history of natural science. Published in London by Robert Havell Jr. starting in 1827, The Birds of America appeared in double-elephant folio format: each sheet measured roughly 39 by 26 inches, large enough to render every species at life size. The Great Horned Owl plate exemplifies Audubon's signature method of mounting freshly collected specimens on wire armatures and working directly from them in watercolour and pastel, achieving anatomical accuracy without sacrificing the sense of a living animal in its element. The project took eleven years to complete and produced 435 hand-coloured aquatint engravings; it remains one of the rarest and most valuable illustrated books ever published, with complete original sets fetching tens of millions of dollars at auction. Audubon's contribution sits firmly within the European natural history illustration tradition traced from Belon and Gesner through Edwards and Buffon, but his insistence on dramatic, life-size poses broke decisively from the stiff profile conventions of his predecessors.
