About the Artwork
Painted at the height of Grimshaw's career in 1875, this work represents his boldest venture into narrative painting, departing from his usual moonlit suburban scenes to tackle one of Victorian literature's most beloved tragic figures. The composition emerged during Grimshaw's most productive period when he was gaining recognition beyond his Leeds studio, with collectors beginning to appreciate his unique ability to capture the melancholy poetry of twilight hours. Unlike his contemporaries who focused on the lady's medieval chamber, Grimshaw chose the climactic moment of her river journey, using his unparalleled skill with atmospheric effects to create a visual poem that rivals Tennyson's verses in emotional impact.
