About the Artwork
Painted during Sorolla's most prolific period, this work emerged from his deep connection to Valencia's fishing communities, which he documented extensively between 1904 and 1910. The artist had recently achieved international acclaim following his 1909 exhibition at the Hispanic Society in New York, and paintings like this Valencia coastal scene demonstrated his unique position bridging Spanish costumbrismo with French Impressionist light theory. Unlike his contemporaries who idealized Mediterranean life, Sorolla presented these fishermen with authentic detail, from the weathered boat hull to the specific rigging of Valencian fishing vessels; the painting reflects his commitment to capturing Spain's maritime culture during a period of rapid modernization that threatened traditional ways of life.
