Fruit Still Life

Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) was regarded by his own contemporaries as the supreme master of the Dutch floral and fruit still life, a reputation that held through the 18th century and was confirmed by the extraordinary prices his works commanded at auction during his lifetime. Fruit Still Life belongs to a body of work in which van Huysum moved fruit arrangements onto stone ledges and marble surfaces, creating compositions that are more spare and jewel-like than his densely packed flower pieces, but no less dazzling in their optical ambition. Working in Amsterdam, he became famous for a particular technique of glazing that produced an enamel-like surface richness, and he guarded his methods so closely that he refused to allow pupils or visitors to watch him paint. The trompe-l'oeil precision of the butterfly, a device with roots in Flemish panel painting, functions as both a signature illusion and a vanitas emblem: beauty observed at the very moment of its passing. Van Huysum's fruit pieces were sought by European courts and private collectors across the continent, and works of this type entered royal collections in Germany, France and Britain within decades of their completion, cementing the artist's international standing.
