By December 1923, J. C. Leyendecker was the dominant figure in American commercial illustration, having produced Post covers continuously since 1899. His Saturday Evening Post covers defined the visual grammar of American aspiration and celebration for a generation, and his Christmas subjects were among the most anticipated of each year. Leyendecker worked in a manner that drew directly from Academic Realism, training under the Académie Julian in Paris in the 1890s, and he carried that Salon discipline of structured light, precise anatomy and controlled surface into magazine illustration at a moment when the medium was reaching its widest popular audience. His Santa Claus, unlike the rosy and rounded figure Thomas Nast had popularised in the previous century, tends toward something more weighty and monumental: a figure of genuine physical presence rather than comfortable cliché. This 1923 cover is a strong example of that approach, investing a familiar cultural icon with real pictorial gravity. The cover appeared at the height of the Post's commercial and cultural influence, when a Curtis Publishing print run placed Leyendecker's image in millions of American households simultaneously, making these covers among the most widely seen artworks in the country by any measure.
