Painted in 1840, Sailing Ship on the High Seas by Moonlight belongs to a pivotal moment in Ivan Aivazovsky's early career. Having trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg under Maxim Vorobiev, he was awarded a scholarship that sent him to Europe between 1840 and 1844. This canvas dates to the opening of that journey, when the young artist was absorbing the legacy of Romanticism directly from its sources: the dramatic light of J.M.W. Turner, whom Aivazovsky met in London, and the seascape conventions of the Dutch and Flemish masters he studied in Rome and Paris.
