Aivazovsky painted In the Roads, Evening during one of the most productive decades of his long career, working from his studio in Feodosia on the Crimean coast, where the Black Sea provided an inexhaustible source of light conditions to study. By the 1870s, he had already received international recognition, exhibiting across Europe and earning honors from academies in St. Petersburg, Rome, Paris, and Amsterdam. His work of this period reflects a mature confidence: rather than the dramatic storm scenes that made his early reputation, paintings such as this one pursue a quieter register, exploring the poetry of marine light at transitional hours. The cannon salute from the warship introduces a note of ceremony into the tranquility, a device Aivazovsky used to anchor a scene in a specific historical and military world without allowing it to overwhelm the atmospheric mood. The painting belongs to a sustained body of work in which the Romantic tradition of sublime seascape is refined toward something more intimate and observational, anticipating the tonal sensitivity that would later define European Impressionism without ever fully departing from academic draftsmanship. Aivazovsky remained the preeminent marine painter of the Russian Empire throughout this period, and works from this decade are well represented in the collections of the Aivazovsky National Art Gallery in Feodosia and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
