Golden Autumn

Ostroukhov painted Golden Autumn in 1887 and exhibited it the following year with the Peredvizhniki, the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions, the reformist realist collective that had broken with the Imperial Academy to bring unidealized Russian landscapes directly to the public. The picture was acquired by Pavel Tretyakov for his Moscow collection almost immediately, and it remains one of the permanent highlights of the State Tretyakov Gallery. At the time of its creation, Ostroukhov was in his late twenties and moving from portraiture toward the landscape work that would define his reputation; he had studied under the Peredvizhnik masters Chistyakov and Polenov, and the influence of Polenov's warm-toned forest interiors is visible in the painting's intimate scale and close observation of specific species of foliage. Within the Peredvizhniki tradition, which more often favored the melancholy of Russian autumn as a symbol of social weight, Ostroukhov's picture is notable for its affirmative, almost exuberant tone: the season is read as abundance rather than loss. The work became widely reproduced in Russia and is frequently cited as one of the canonical images of Russian autumn, second in popular recognition only to Levitan's treatments of the same season.
