Autumn Trees Along a Stream

Jones spent much of his mature career working in the fields and river margins of rural Maryland and Virginia, and this painting belongs to his sustained engagement with the American countryside in the tradition of Barbizon-inflected landscape painting. Trained partly in Paris, Jones absorbed the tonal sensitivity and close observation of the Barbizon painters and filtered it through the American Tonalist sensibility that George Inness was simultaneously refining. Where Inness dissolved form into atmosphere, Jones held onto structure: individual trees remain readable, the ground plane is specific, and the light, while soft, is keenly observed. His autumnal scenes were among his most celebrated works in the late nineteenth century, winning him medals at the National Academy of Design and bringing his paintings into important American private collections. American Tonalism rarely achieved a more persuasive combination of structural clarity and chromatic warmth than in Jones's fall subjects, and this picture represents the movement at its most concentrated.
