About the Artwork
Painted during Klimt's Golden Period, this work followed his revolutionary ceiling paintings for the University of Vienna and coincided with his leadership of the Vienna Secession movement. The painting represents Klimt's mature exploration of the eternal feminine as both creative and destructive force, reflecting the psychoanalytic theories emerging in fin-de-siècle Vienna through Freud's circle. Water Serpents II demonstrates how Klimt transformed the academic nude tradition by embedding figures within decorative matrices that suggest both luxury and danger, creating visual metaphors for the unconscious desires that his contemporary intellectuals were beginning to theorize and examine.
