Baby (Cradle)
About the Artwork
Painted during the final years of World War I when Klimt was increasingly drawn to themes of family and renewal, this work represents his exploration of maternal tenderness amid a period of cultural upheaval in Vienna. The painting emerged from Klimt's continued fascination with textiles and pattern, influenced by his collaborations with the Wiener Werkstätte, yet here serves the deeper purpose of celebrating new life and protective love. This piece stands among Klimt's most psychologically complex works, where his decorative virtuosity supports rather than overwhelms the emotional content; the painting remained in his studio at his death in 1918, suggesting its personal significance to the artist who never married but maintained relationships with several women who bore his children.
