About the Artwork
Created during the height of Watts' exploration of cosmic themes in the late 1880s, this painting emerged from his profound engagement with Eastern philosophy and his desire to visualize abstract concepts of divine omnipresence through allegorical imagery. Watts conceived this work as part of his larger project to create a visual theology that could speak to Victorian audiences increasingly questioning traditional religious frameworks; the painting's androgynous central figure reflects his belief that divine consciousness transcended human categories of gender and form. The composition's architectural elements draw from both Christian and Buddhist iconographic traditions, positioning Watts within the broader Symbolist movement that sought to express spiritual truths through evocative visual metaphor rather than literal representation.
