About the Artwork
Created during Von Stuck's mature period when he had established himself as a leading figure of the Munich Secession, this painting represents his fascination with Greek tragedy and the psychological dimensions of ancient myth. The work emerged from his series exploring themes of guilt, vengeance, and divine justice that preoccupied European Symbolist artists at the turn of the century. Von Stuck's interpretation of Aeschylus's "Oresteia" reflects the period's interest in psychoanalytic concepts, presenting the Furies not merely as external tormentors but as manifestations of Orestes's internal guilt over matricide. The painting was exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast, where Von Stuck's mythological works established his reputation as "the painter of sin" and influenced a generation of German artists including his student Wassily Kandinsky.
