About the Artwork
Painted during Hughes' mature period when he had perfected his synthesis of Pre-Raphaelite idealism with Symbolist mysticism, this work exemplifies his fascination with liminal moments between night and day, earth and heaven. Hughes, who had studied under Ford Madox Brown and worked alongside Burne-Jones, created this painting when the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's influence was waning, yet he remained committed to their vision of spiritual beauty rendered with technical precision.
