The Ferry

Leighton painted The Ferry at the height of his commercial and critical popularity, during a decade in which his medievalizing Victorian Romanticism had found an eager audience at the Royal Academy and among private collectors drawn to images of courtly sentiment and rural English life rendered with literary precision.
