Portrait of Yarrow Mamout
About the Artwork
Painted when Yarrow Mamout was approximately 134 years old according to his own account, this portrait represents a remarkable intersection of American social history and artistic documentation. Peale, then 78 himself and at the height of his powers as both artist and museum founder, was drawn to Mamout as a subject worthy of serious artistic treatment: a revolutionary act in 1819 America. The Muslim West African, who had purchased his freedom and become a property owner in Georgetown, fascinated Peale not as an exotic curiosity but as a fellow human being deserving of the same careful observation he brought to his portraits of founding fathers. This work stands as one of the earliest respectful portraits of an African American by a major American artist, predating the abolitionist movement and challenging contemporary social hierarchies through the simple act of dignified representation.
