Shrovetide

Kustodiev painted Shrovetide in 1916, during a period of acute personal and historical crisis. The First World War had fractured Russian public life, and the artist himself was already suffering from the spinal tuberculosis that would eventually confine him to a wheelchair. Rather than retreating into gloom, Kustodiev turned with fierce deliberateness toward an idealised vision of old Russian provincial festivity, drawing on memories of the Volga towns he had known since childhood. Shrovetide, the week of carnival preceding Orthodox Lent, was the richest of those memories: a season of troika rides, fairs, pancake vendors, and collective outdoor pleasure before the long fast. The painting belongs to a sustained series Kustodiev produced on this theme between 1916 and 1922, each version enlarging and intensifying the spectacle. Art historians have read the series as both a personal act of resistance against physical suffering and a cultural act of preservation, fixing a communal way of life that the Revolution of 1917 would soon extinguish. The work is held in the collection of the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, and it stands as one of the most complete statements of Kustodiev's mature vision: Post-Impressionist colour discipline placed entirely in the service of Russian decorative and narrative tradition, far outside the Western avant-garde movements his contemporaries were pursuing in the same years.
