About the Artwork

Angelo Jank (1868-1940) was a Munich-based painter and illustrator whose career was shaped by his dual membership in the Munich Secession and his long association with the satirical weekly Simplicissimus. Equestrian and hunting subjects occupied a central place in his easel painting from the 1890s onward, and works like this one demonstrate why he was regarded as one of the most capable sporting painters in the German-speaking world at the turn of the twentieth century. The Parforcejagd, the continental tradition of hunting on horseback with hounds following the full course of a quarry, carried strong aristocratic associations, and Jank depicted it repeatedly with the eye of someone who understood the mechanics of the horse as well as the social theater of the chase. His approach draws on the plein-air tradition absorbed through Munich's late-nineteenth-century contacts with French Impressionism, translated into the brisker, more illustrational idiom that made his work immediately legible in both gallery and print contexts. The painting sits comfortably within the sporting and equestrian strand of German Impressionism that paralleled, without directly imitating, the French mainstream.
