About the Artwork
By 1917, Modigliani had arrived at the distilled figural language that would define his mature output. Working in Paris and closely connected to the dealer Paul Guillaume, he was producing a concentrated series of female portraits and nudes that drew on his long study of African masks, Khmer sculpture, and the Mannerist elongation of Pontormo and Botticelli. Modernism's vocabulary of simplified form and flattened pictorial space gave him a framework, but the warmth and psychological directness of his surfaces belong to no school program. The sitter's North African identity, signalled in the title, places this work within a broader early-20th-century Parisian engagement with the non-Western world, though Modigliani's interest is consistently in the individual presence of a face rather than in ethnographic notation. The work has been associated with the group of single-figure paintings that Guillaume exhibited and championed during the artist's lifetime, contributing to the posthumous canonization of this period as Modigliani's most fully achieved.
