Banks of the Loing, Autumn Effect

Sisley settled near the Loing river valley in the early 1880s, working from Moret-sur-Loing and the surrounding hamlets for the rest of his life. Where Monet was restlessly strategic and Pissarro socially engaged, Sisley remained committed to a single stretch of river country, returning to its particular light through every season. Banks of the Loing, Autumn Effect belongs to a sequence of canvases painted along this waterway in the mid-1880s, a period when Sisley was refining the lateral, expansive compositions that distinguish his mature work from his earlier Argenteuil paintings. The series demonstrates how he used the flat Loing corridor to study the transition between seasons: the specific amber of dying vegetation against a sky that has already turned wintry is a coloristic problem he revisited with the systematic care more often attributed to his contemporaries. Although Sisley was the least commercially celebrated of the core Impressionist group during his lifetime, the Loing canvases have since been recognized as among the most structurally assured landscapes produced within the movement, admired for the clarity with which they balance observed fact against painterly economy. Works from this series are held in major European and American museum collections.
