Étoile Polaire (North Star)

Mucha produced Étoile Polaire in 1902 as part of his celebrated series of the four stars: Étoile du Matin, Étoile du Soir, Étoile Polaire, and Étoile de la Lune. By this point in his career he had already secured his reputation with the celebrated Sarah Bernhardt theatre posters of 1894 onward and the large decorative panels of the late 1890s. The star series, however, carried a more personal and philosophical charge: each figure embodies a celestial principle rather than a commercial personality, reflecting Mucha's deepening interest in Slavic mysticism and Freemasonic thought. The series was produced in Paris during the height of his international celebrity, yet its mood is inward rather than promotional. Art nouveau at this moment was reaching a self-conscious maturity in European print culture, and Mucha's panels exemplify the movement's most refined synthesis: the whiplash contour, the flattened decorative field, the stylised female archetype, and the integration of text and ornament into a seamless pictorial surface. The original lithographs were widely collected and were reproduced across Europe; today they reside in major holdings including the Mucha Museum in Prague and the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts.
