About the Artwork
Mucha produced Music in 1898 as one of four panels in the series Les Arts, alongside Poetry, Dance and Painting. By this point Mucha's career in Paris had been transformed by the celebrated 1895 Sarah Bernhardt poster commission, and he was now the most sought-after decorative artist in the French capital. The Les Arts series was conceived as a set of luxury decorative panels for domestic interiors rather than as conventional advertising work, reflecting the growing appetite among the Parisian bourgeoisie for Art nouveau objects of the highest graphic refinement. Mucha's training in Vienna and Munich, combined with his deep study of Byzantine mosaic, medieval illumination and Japanese woodblock prints, fed directly into the dense ornamental vocabulary of these panels. The series was published by F. Champenois and proved enormously influential across European applied arts, from ceramic tile design to jewellery. Mucha himself regarded the decorative panel series as the most personal expression of his Style Mucha, the idiom that the rest of Europe simply called Art nouveau.
