Clair de Lune (Moonlight)

This panel belongs to Mucha's celebrated series Les Temps du Jour and related allegorical sets produced in Paris at the height of his commercial and artistic powers in the early 1900s. By 1902 Mucha had already transformed European poster design with his 1894 Sarah Bernhardt playbill for Gismonda, and his studio was producing large-format decorative panels, known as panneaux décoratifs, intended not as advertisements but as collectible works of art in their own right. Clair de Lune was conceived as part of a set of four panels representing the times of day or celestial bodies, each figure embodying a natural phenomenon through costume, attribute, and symbolic light. The crescent halo is the period's most direct shorthand for the moon goddess tradition, placing this image within the long European lineage of Luna and Selene while filtering those references through the distinctly modern, secular vocabulary of Jugendstil and Parisian decorative art. Mucha's formal training at the Munich Academy and under academic painters in Paris gave him a command of figure drawing that underpins every apparently effortless contour; the flatness is deliberate and rigorously controlled, not a limitation. The panels sold widely in reproduction and have been collected internationally, with original lithographs held by major institutions including the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
