About the Artwork
Mucha completed Dance in 1898 as one of four large decorative panels collectively titled The Arts, alongside Poetry, Music, and Painting. The series was commissioned as autonomous decorative works rather than commercial posters, and it marks a moment when Mucha was consciously claiming a place for Art nouveau within the tradition of fine-art allegory rather than applied design. By 1898 he had already achieved international fame through his poster work for Sarah Bernhardt, but the The Arts panels represent his ambition to move beyond the page and into the parlour and gallery. Dance in particular distils the movement's central thesis: that the female figure, ornament, and nature are not separate categories but a single continuous rhythm. The work was widely reproduced in chromolithographic form, and its composition has since become one of the most reproduced images in the Art nouveau canon, influencing graphic design well into the twentieth century.
