Autumn

Mucha produced the Les Saisons decorative panels in 1896, at the height of his Paris career and only a year after the celebrated Sarah Bernhardt poster that made his name overnight. By 1896 he was operating as the defining visual voice of Art nouveau in the French capital, and the four seasons offered him a vehicle for exploring the movement's core proposition: that the decorative arts and the fine arts were one tradition. The panels were not exhibition pieces in the conventional sense; they were conceived as luxury chromolithographs for domestic interiors, a format that gave Mucha freedom to push ornamental complexity to its limit without the constraints of a commercial client. Autumn was the most immediately popular of the four, its warm palette and harvest abundance reading as both sensuous and wholesome at a moment when Parisian taste for the organic forms of Art nouveau was at its peak. The series was widely reproduced across Europe and cemented Mucha's position as the master of the stylized female figure set within a botanical architectural frame, an approach that would define his output through the turn of the century.
