Adoration of the Magi
About the Artwork
Dürer painted the Adoration of the Magi in 1504 as the central panel of the Paumgartner Altarpiece commission extended by the Uffizi acquisition: it was ordered by Frederick III of Saxony and delivered to him as a self-contained panel, and it has been housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence since the late 16th century, acquired by the Medici as part of their systematic collection of Northern masterworks. The year 1504 was a pivot in Dürer's career: he had made his first journey to Venice in 1494 and returned to Nuremberg with a thorough understanding of Renaissance spatial construction, Bellini's colour, and Mantegna's sculptural figure style. This panel is the fullest statement of that synthesis before his second Italian journey of 1505. Where his earlier Adoration of 1504 in the Uffizi had compressed the scene, here the three-dimensional recession of the ruin, the volumetric draping and the Italianate landscape background show a painter who had absorbed the Renaissance not as a set of borrowed motifs but as a structural logic. Art historians regard the panel as the point at which Dürer conclusively reconciled Northern precision with Southern grandeur, producing a work that neither tradition could have generated alone.
