Artwork Description

The Sower by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

Framed Canvas Art

Van Gogh's The Sower captures a lone figure striding across a plowed field under an enormous yellow sun that dominates the composition's upper portion. The painting divides dramatically between the golden-yellow sky with its radiating brushstrokes and the purple-blue furrows of the freshly tilled earth, creating a complementary color harmony that vibrates with energy. The sower himself, rendered in dark tones, moves from right to left across the canvas while scattering seed, his gesture frozen mid-throw as he follows the path of golden light reflected on the field's surface. Van Gogh's characteristic impasto technique creates a heavily textured surface where individual brushstrokes remain visible, particularly in the swirling patterns of the sky and the rhythmic marks that define the plowed rows.

Read full artwork description

Painted during van Gogh's time in Arles in 1888, this work represents his fascination with rural labor and the cycle of agricultural life, themes he returned to repeatedly while developing his mature Post-Impressionist style. The painting reflects van Gogh's desire to create art that spoke to working people, drawing inspiration from Jean-François Millet's famous sower while transforming the subject through his own expressive vision and bold color choices. Created during one of his most productive periods, when he was exploring the effects of southern French light and developing his signature style of dynamic brushwork, this canvas demonstrates van Gogh's ability to infuse everyday agricultural scenes with spiritual and symbolic meaning. The work embodies the artist's belief in the dignity of manual labor and his search for paintings that would console the afflicted, representing hope and renewal through the eternal act of sowing.

Our museum-grade giclee reproduction preserves the subtle gradations between the warm yellows of the sun and sky and the cool purples and blues of the shadowed earth, capturing van Gogh's masterful use of complementary colors that mass-produced prints flatten into muddy tones. The archival process on heavyweight cotton canvas maintains the texture of van Gogh's distinctive brushwork, from the radiating strokes that emanate from the sun to the directional marks that follow the contours of the plowed field. Sourced from high-resolution museum scans, our reproduction recovers the full dynamic range from the deepest purple shadows in the foreground furrows to the brilliant yellow highlights of the setting sun, revealing details in both the darkest and brightest areas that inferior reproductions lose to compression. The ornate composite frame, finished in warm tones, complements the painting's golden palette while providing elegant contrast to the work's earthy blues and purples."

Many older painting have lost their vibrancy with age as varnish yellows and dirt accumulates. Our artisans use the latest in digital technology to restore these masterpieces to their former glory.

Fredrix Canvas with HP Latex Inks

All of our reproductions are printed on archival quality Fredrix poly/cotton blend canvas for longevity and vibrancy. This canvas has a more traditional look and feel compared to the 100% polyester "canvas" used by some competitors .

HP Latex Inks are non toxic and environmentally friendly compared to harsh, solvent based inks while still providing excellent range throughout the color gamut.

Poplar Stretcher Frame

Our stretcher frame is kiln dried Poplar that has been sustainably harvested from sawmills in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia and is Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable by the AMHI.

This is the best stretcher frame available and is far superior to the MDF and imported pine used by many competitors.
