In Phaedra and Hippolytus, George Barbier, a preeminent French illustrator, translates classical Greek tragedy into the sophisticated, highly stylized visual language of early Art Deco. Created in 1914, this image is a beautiful example of the Neo-Classical aesthetic popular at the time, which Barbier rendered with the bold lines, flat color, and decorative flair that would soon define the Jazz Age. The work depicts the moment of desperate, unrequited love from Greek myth and the tragedy by Euripides. Phaedra, the wife of Theseus, embraces her stepson, Hippolytus, who is devoted to the goddess Artemis and rejects her advances.
