By 1892, Inness had absorbed influences from the Barbizon School and was creating works that prioritized mood and emotional resonance over topographical accuracy; this painting exemplifies his belief that art should express the 'reality of the unseen' rather than mere surface appearance. The work reflects Inness's deep engagement with Swedenborgianism, a mystical Christian philosophy that viewed nature as a manifestation of divine presence, and his conviction that landscape painting could serve as a vehicle for spiritual contemplation rather than simple documentation.
