Painted during Monet's transformative three-month sojourn to the Italian Riviera in early 1884, this canvas represents a pivotal moment when the artist ventured beyond his familiar northern French subjects to explore Mediterranean luminosity. The trip to Bordighera, undertaken despite his dealer Paul Durand-Ruel's concerns about market demand, resulted in nearly forty canvases that expanded Impressionism's geographic and chromatic range. Monet wrote enthusiastically to Alice Hoschedé about the 'fairy-tale beauty' of the ancient olive groves and their challenge to his established palette; this particular view became one of his most successful Bordighera compositions, later acquired by discerning collectors who recognized its importance in documenting the artist's southern Italian period and his ongoing investigation of light's transformative effects on landscape.
