vincent_van_gogh__landschap_met_konijnen
Field with Two Rabbits – Vincent van Gogh, 1889

Field with Two Rabbits by Vincent van Gogh, 1889

Framed Canvas Art

Van Gogh's Field with Two Rabbits (Dutch: Landschap met Konijnen) presents a sun-baked hillside at Saint-Rémy rendered in the full heat of his most energized period. The picture's dominant tones are deep ochre and amber yellow, laid across the sloping ground in dense, directional strokes that make the earth itself seem to breathe. Two rabbits crouch in the middle distance, their warm buff and gray forms anchored in a shallow diagonal furrow that pulls the eye upward toward a thicket of dark scrub pine and olive. Above the foliage, the terrain curves again into a warm sandy bank; a serpentine root or twisted branch writhes along the upper left in dark umber, contrasting sharply with the luminous greens of the low bushes. Light falls from above in a diffuse, almost oppressive warmth, with no cast shadow but every surface alive with chromatic modulation. The composition is intimate in scale and free of any human figure, giving the two small animals an unusual weight as the sole living presences in a landscape that threatens to swallow them.

Van Gogh painted this work in the autumn of 1889 while a voluntary patient at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, one of the most productive yet psychologically turbulent chapters of his career. Confined largely to the asylum grounds, he turned the enclosed garden, the surrounding wheat fields and the rocky Alpilles hillsides into the raw material for an astonishing sequence of canvases. Post-Impressionism finds one of its most personal expressions here: the palette far exceeds what the eye would see under even intense southern light, color serving not description but inner sensation. Van Gogh was in active correspondence with his brother Theo and with Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin during these months, debating whether painting should move toward symbolic abstraction or remain rooted in observed nature; Field with Two Rabbits sits squarely in that tension, its rabbits observed with steady attention while the terrain around them pulses with an almost hallucinatory intensity. The picture is held in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, which acquired it as part of the foundational bequest of the artist's estate, and it has been discussed by scholars as an example of his interest in small, quiet animal subjects as an antidote to the grand, storm-driven canvases he was also producing at Saint-Rémy.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas is particularly important for a picture like this one, where the meaning lives in the surface. Mass-produced offset prints flatten the subtle tonal gradations between the pale sandy crest and the deeper amber furrows of the foreground, and they lose the textural distinction between van Gogh's dense, heavily loaded horizontal strokes across the earth and the shorter, more agitated marks he used for the foliage. Our source files have been digitally restored from high-resolution museum scans, recovering the full chromatic range from the near-black umber of the twisted branch to the bright yellow-green highlights on the scrub that degrade to a single flat tone in lesser reproductions. The ornate composite frame, offered in your choice of finish, completes the presentation with a gallery-quality border worthy of the work inside.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/vincent_van_gogh__landschap_met_konijnen__large__gold.jpg?v=1792948526
