john_james_audubon__peregrine_falcons_duck_hawks
Peregrine Falcons (Duck Hawks) – John James Audubon, 1827

Peregrine Falcons (Duck Hawks) by John James Audubon, 1827

Framed Canvas Art

Two peregrine falcons dominate this charged composition, their bodies angled in tense confrontation over a freshly caught bird pressed against rocky ground. The nearer falcon lunges forward with wings half-spread, its cream-and-rufous breast barred with dark chevrons, while the second bird rears back with broad wings fully fanned, filling the upper right of the picture plane with sweeping brown primaries. Audubon renders the plumage with the precision of a field naturalist: every flight feather is individually articulated, the yellow cere and talons glow against the muted earth tones of the rocks, and the pale underparts catch the cool, diffuse light of an overcast sky. The background opens into a wide, hazy landscape, a suggestion of blue hills and pale sky that recedes with atmospheric softness, throwing the sharp-edged raptors into even greater relief. The kill beneath them, a ruffed grouse, is depicted with the same fidelity, its fanned tail and mottled body a foil to the predators' concentrated energy.

This plate was prepared for Audubon's monumental publication The Birds of America, issued in London in double-elephant folio format between 1827 and 1838, and it stands as one of the most dramatic compositions in that celebrated series. Audubon painted the falcons at life-scale, as was his practice throughout the project, using wired specimens posed against watercolour backgrounds to achieve a naturalism that distinguished his work sharply from the static cabinet-specimen illustrations that preceded it. The peregrine had particular significance in the ornithological literature of the period, and Audubon's choice to show two birds in active dispute over prey, rather than a single perched specimen, was a deliberate departure from natural history illustration convention. The plate was engraved and aquatinted by Robert Havell Jr. in London, whose printing workshop translated Audubon's watercolours into the large-format hand-coloured prints now held by institutions including the New-York Historical Society and the Smithsonian. Audubon was at the height of his ambition when this plate was completed: recently arrived in Britain, he was simultaneously raising subscriptions, supervising engravers, and continuing to paint new subjects at a pace that astonished his contemporaries.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas preserves the tonal transitions that make this plate exceptional: the subtle graduation from the warm buff of the falcons' breast feathers into the cool shadow beneath the wings, the delicate layering of grey and brown across the rocky foreground, and the full range from the dense near-black of the primary feathers at the picture's edges to the pale luminosity of the open sky. Mass-produced lithographic reproductions compress precisely these midtone passages, flattening the barred plumage into uniform fields and losing the atmospheric haze of the distant hills. Our source image has been digitally restored from high-resolution museum scans, recovering the colour accuracy and fine feather detail that degraded reproductions cannot match. The reproduction arrives mounted in an ornate composite frame in a warm gold finish, ready to hang.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/john_james_audubon__peregrine_falcons_duck_hawks__large__silver.jpg?v=1792366956
