john_james_audubon__great_footed_hawk
Great Footed Hawk – John James Audubon, 1827

Great Footed Hawk by John James Audubon, 1827

Framed Canvas Art

This celebrated plate from Audubon's Birds of America portrays two Peregrine Falcons, then known by the common name "Great Footed Hawk," locked in the fierce, kinetic ritual of a shared kill. The composition crackles with directed tension: one bird spreads broad, barred wings in a sharp diagonal across the upper half of the plate, its slate-blue and charcoal flight feathers fanning against an ash-gray and buff rock face, while the second bird, wings half-mantled, drives its taloned feet into the prey below. The defeated quarry, a brilliantly rendered duck, spills glossy green, teal, orange-red and creamy white plumage beneath them, providing the plate's only burst of warm saturated colour against the cool, controlled tones that dominate the rest of the composition. Audubon's draughtsmanship is precise and unsentimental: the falcons' dark facial masks, yellow ceres and pale, spotted breast feathers are rendered with the exactitude of a working naturalist, while the diagonal thrust of wings and talons gives the image the charged immediacy of a captured moment rather than a specimen study.

The plate was engraved and hand-coloured by Robert Havell Jr. and published in London between 1827 and 1838 as part of the double-elephant folio edition of Birds of America, Audubon's landmark contribution to both natural history illustration and American visual culture. At the time of publication, Audubon was working to secure subscribers among British naturalists and aristocrats, and the dramatic, life-sized renderings of North American birds represented a deliberate argument: that the continent's wildlife was as worthy of serious scientific and artistic attention as any subject in European natural history. The Peregrine Falcon plate was among the most admired for its compositional daring, depicting not a perched or flying bird in isolation but a scene of predation with full narrative force. The Birds of America folio is now regarded as one of the most valuable printed books in the world, with complete sets fetching tens of millions of dollars at auction, and individual plates held in the collections of institutions including the New York Historical Society, the Smithsonian and the Natural History Museum in London.

Canvas Classics reproduces Great Footed Hawk from a high-resolution museum scan digitally restored to recover the chromatic fidelity of a hand-coloured original: the cool slate and blue-gray of the falcons' dorsal plumage graduates cleanly through mid-tone charcoal to the near-black of the primary feathers, while the warm teal, orange-red and white of the prey plumage retain their full separation against the neutral stone ground. Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas preserves the fine engraved line that defines each individual feather barb, detail that collapses entirely in poster-quality reproduction. The ornate composite frame, available in your choice of finish, completes a presentation worthy of this foundational work of American natural history art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/john_james_audubon__great_footed_hawk__large__dark_bronze.jpg?v=1792366877
