john_james_audubon__arctic_hare_nga
Arctic Hare – John James Audubon, 1841

Arctic Hare by John James Audubon, 1841

Framed Canvas Art

This plate from Audubon's landmark mammal survey presents two Arctic hares (Lepus arcticus) in a spare highland setting, one in its pale winter coat and one in the transitional gray of summer. The composition is anchored by the creamy white form of the winter animal at left, its upright ears tipped with black, set against a cool, luminous sky moving from pale blue through soft cloud to lilac at the horizon. The second hare crouches forward in the right foreground, its dense gray-brown fur stippled with fine mid-tones, alert eyes and dark-tipped ears creating a counterpoint of tension against the stillness of its companion. A low mountain ridge closes the background in muted blue-gray, and a sweep of tawny, frost-burned grass grounds both figures in a believable northern latitude. The handling is that of natural history illustration at its most considered: Audubon draws from life observation and from study skins, rendering the animals' volumetric weight and pelage texture with the precision of a field naturalist and the compositional confidence of a practiced painter.

By 1841 Audubon had largely completed the celebrated Birds of America (1827 to 1838) and turned his ambitions toward a comparable survey of North American mammals, undertaken with the Scottish naturalist John Bachman. The resulting work, The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, was issued in parts between 1845 and 1848, with a three-volume text by Bachman following through 1854. The Arctic hare plate belongs to the preparatory campaign of that decade and demonstrates Audubon's ability to adapt the compositional strategies he had honed for avian subjects to the very different formal problems posed by terrestrial mammals: bilateral symmetry, the depiction of camouflage, and the challenge of conveying two colour phases of a single species within one image. The tradition he was working in, traceable through Mark Catesby and George Edwards, positioned the plate as simultaneously a scientific record and a work of graphic art. Audubon pushed both ambitions further than any predecessor had in the American context, and the mammal plates, though less celebrated than the bird folios, are regarded by natural history art historians as equally accomplished within the natural history illustration genre.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas preserves the specific tonal transitions that distinguish this plate from mass-produced poster copies: the gradation from the winter hare's brightest white shoulder through the soft warm beige of its underbelly, the subtle shift in the summer animal's coat from cool gray at the spine to the fawn and ochre tones along its haunches, and the delicate range from the almost-black of the ear tips to the pale lavender of the sky above the ridge. The fine stippled texture of the fur, the crisp botanical detail of the dried grasses, and the soft dissolved edges of the mountain background are resolved fully at archival resolution in a way that compressed reproductions cannot sustain. Our source material has been digitally restored from high-resolution museum scans, recovering the color accuracy and fine line work that repeated photographic generations degrade. The ornate composite frame, available in Gold, Silver or Bronze finish, presents the plate at a scale and weight that situate it correctly as a work of serious natural history art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/john_james_audubon__arctic_hare_nga__large__dark_bronze.jpg?v=1792366825
