jacques_louis_david__portrait-of-madame-de-verninac
Portrait of Madame de Verninac – Jacques-Louis David, 1799

Portrait of Madame de Verninac by Jacques-Louis David, 1799

Framed Canvas Art

Seated in a spare, gilded Empire chair, Henriette de Verninac occupies the canvas with a composed authority that is characteristic of David's finest portraits. She wears a white muslin dress in the antique mode, its draped folds falling with sculptural weight, while a warm saffron-gold shawl wraps her left arm and cascades across her lap in a broad, luminous diagonal that anchors the composition. Her dark curled hair, wound with a ribbon, frames a face rendered in cool, porcelain-smooth flesh tones, the cheeks carrying only the faintest blush. The background is an unmodulated warm gray, stripping away all environmental incident so that the figure reads against it with the clarity of a bas-relief. David's handling is the signature of the Neoclassical manner at its most refined: invisible brushwork, edges controlled to hairline precision, and colour held within a restrained range of ivory, ochre, and gray, punctuated by that single bold note of golden amber. The pose itself, with one arm extended along the chair's gilded rail and her gaze directed steadily outward, recalls antique sculptural prototypes that David had absorbed during his Roman years.

Painted in 1799, the year of Napoleon's coup and on the cusp of the Consulate, Portrait of Madame de Verninac belongs to a concentrated period in which David was consolidating his authority as the defining painter of the French Republic's civic ideals. Henriette was the sister of the writer Eugène Delacroix, a connection that makes the picture a quiet crossroads of two generations of French art history. David had recently returned from his imprisonment following the fall of Robespierre, a period that sobered and sharpened his formal instincts. The portrait is now held in the Louvre, where it has long been regarded as one of the most fully achieved likenesses of the Directory-era bourgeoisie: aristocratic in bearing, antique in costume, but alert with the psychological presence of a contemporary individual. Neoclassicism in David's hands was never merely a stylistic costume; it was an ethical position, an argument that clear line, cool color and formal discipline could embody civic virtue. Madame de Verninac wears that argument literally, her white dress and golden shawl drawn directly from the conventions of the Roman matron.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas is calibrated precisely for the demands this painting makes. The subtle gradation from the cool gray of the background into the warm ivory of the dress, a transition David manages in the space of only a few centimeters of paint, requires both tonal precision and a colour gamut that cheaper reproduction processes compress and flatten. The delicate blush of her skin, the burnished saffron of the shawl, and the near-white highlights at the muslin's gathered edge each occupy distinct tonal addresses that our 12-color archival inks resolve faithfully. Our source material has been digitally restored from high-resolution museum scans, correcting the yellowing and tonal drift that affects most circulating reproductions of this canvas. The ornate composite frame, offered in a choice of finishes, completes the presentation at the level the subject commands.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/jacques_louis_david__portrait_of_madame_de_verninac__large__regency_gold.jpg?v=1790808737
