grant_wood__parson_weems_fable
Parson Weems' Fable – Grant Wood, 1939

Parson Weems' Fable by Grant Wood, 1939

Framed Canvas Art

A theatrical crimson curtain parts to reveal one of American art's most wryly subversive history paintings: Parson Weems' Fable depicts the famous, wholly invented cherry-tree story as the con it always was. Parson Mason Locke Weems, the book's author and narrator, stands at the right in period dress, drawing back the red velvet drape with a showman's flourish and pointing into a scene that is frankly staged. The young George Washington kneeling beside the felled cherry tree bears the adult president's face, lifted directly from the iconic Atheneum portrait by Gilbert Stuart, an anachronism Wood deploys with deadpan deliberateness. The palette is controlled and declarative: the deep crimson of the curtain anchors the right side, while the lawn opens into a cool sage and olive green, the brick-red colonial house sits squarely in the midground, and the sky above resolves into a pale, even blue-gray. Wood's characteristic handling, smooth and nearly shadowless on the figures, with rounded topiary and cropped lawn, gives the whole picture a quality somewhere between a diorama and a moral tableau. In the background, workers rake the grounds while Washington's father gestures at the fallen tree in theatrical dismay.

Wood painted this work in 1939, at the height of his reputation as the leading voice of American Regionalism, a movement that looked inward at Midwestern and rural American life at a moment when social realism and European modernism competed for critical authority. The painting is both a celebration and a gentle deflation of American mythmaking: Wood had read historian Marcus Cunliffe's scholarship questioning the cherry-tree legend's authenticity, and he constructed the canvas as a visual essay on how national character is manufactured rather than lived. The parson who invented the story is made complicit in the lie by being placed inside his own invention. The adult portrait face on the child's body was Wood's sharpest formal joke, making visible the very mechanism by which legends are retroactively constructed. Parson Weems' Fable entered the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, where it remains one of the defining works of the collection. It was Wood's most extended statement on the relationship between American folklore and American identity, anticipating by decades the post-war scholarly skepticism toward founding mythology.

Canvas Classics reproduces this painting using museum-grade archival giclee on heavyweight cotton canvas, a process that preserves the tonal nuances that mass-produced prints consistently collapse. The subtle gradations across the sage-to-olive lawn, the way the pale sky holds its flatness behind the brick-red house, and the near-porcelain smoothness of Wood's figure surfaces are all recoverable only at archival print resolution. Our source files are prepared from high-resolution institutional scans, restoring the exact crimson depth of the curtain and the cool shadow zones beneath the topiary that degraded reproductions render as muddy brown. The ornate composite frame, available in your chosen finish, is hand-selected to complement Wood's formal, composed tonality. Each print is made to order in North Florida and arrives ready to hang.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/grant_wood__parson_weems_fable__large__dark_bronze.jpg?v=1791134746
