george_inness__the_storm_1
The Storm – George Inness, 1885

The Storm by George Inness, 1885

Framed Canvas Art

Painted in the mid-1880s, The Storm presents a meadow caught in the suspended moment before a downpour breaks. A dense bank of charcoal and slate-gray cloud rolls across nearly the full width of the sky, pressing down on a landscape that responds with an almost theatrical surge of green: the grass of the foreground meadow glows a saturated, yellow-tinged emerald under the strange oblique light that precedes violent weather. Fallen timber in the middle ground lies in casual disorder, a gnarled dead tree at right stripped bare and lit with warm amber against the darkening sky, while a stand of leafy trees to the left shelters a pale farmhouse barely visible in the distance. The composition moves diagonally from the bright open meadow in the lower left toward the storm mass gathering at upper right, and Inness leaves the brushwork open and gestural throughout: the foliage built from quick, overlapping strokes of green and yellow, the cloud mass smeared and blended into a convincing meteorological weight. A single dark figure visible at the field's edge anchors the human scale without interrupting the landscape's dominance.

By the mid-1880s, George Inness had completed his decisive turn away from the precise panoramic landscapes of the Hudson River School that shaped his early career. Having spent formative years in Italy and France in the 1850s, he absorbed the tonal discipline of the Barbizon School painters, particularly Corot and Rousseau, and returned to America committed to painting mood and inner feeling rather than topographic accuracy. The Storm belongs to a suite of weather paintings Inness produced in this decade, works in which meteorological drama became a vehicle for what he described as the landscape's spiritual dimension, shaped in part by his deep commitment to Swedenborgian theology. Tonalism, the movement Inness helped to define, finds one of its more energetic expressions here: the palette is not yet the near-monochrome dissolution of his very late work, but the light is already unified, filtered, and emotionally weighted rather than descriptively brilliant. The painting has been held in major American institutional collections and is widely cited as evidence of the transition in Inness's output from his middle period toward the atmospheric Tonalist canvases of his final years.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas is particularly well suited to a painting whose power depends on fine chromatic gradations. The subtle shift from the warm yellow-green of the sunlit grass to the cooler, deeper green in the shadowed middle ground is a transition that collapses in mass-produced poster printing; on our canvas it is preserved across its full range. The tactile openness of Inness's gestural brushwork, visible in the dragged strokes that form the cloud mass and the broken impasto of the foliage, is reproduced at a resolution that reveals the paint surface rather than flattening it. The full dynamic range from the near-black of the storm's core to the luminous amber of the bare tree at right is drawn from digitally restored high-resolution museum scans, recovering color accuracy that degraded reproductions lose entirely. The ornate composite frame, available in gold, silver, and bronze finishes, completes the presentation as a gallery-ready work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/george_inness__the_storm_1__medium__gold.jpg?v=1792366767
