george_inness__clearing_up
Clearing Up – George Inness, 1860

Clearing Up by George Inness, c. 1860

Framed Canvas Art

In Clearing Up, a storm withdraws across a wide New England valley, its dark violet-gray mass retreating to the upper left while a wedge of pale, warm light breaks open across the middle distance. The foreground is anchored by tumbled fieldstone outcroppings and a shallow stream catching the returning sky, and a stand of willows and autumn-tinged trees in amber, ochre and citron marks the right edge of the composition. A farmhouse with a white clapboard gable sits just beyond the trees, a thread of smoke rising from the chimney, and several figures with cattle move through the open meadow in the middle ground, tiny against the scale of the weather above them. Inness builds the scene with alla prima passages of considerable energy, yet softens the edges of cloud and foliage so that forms dissolve into one another rather than announcing themselves as separate objects. The tonal range is unusually broad: deep green-black in the shadow of the nearest rocks, then lifting through warm greens, yellows and golds to the cream-and-gray luminosity of the clearing sky.

Inness painted this work at a pivotal moment in his career, after two extended periods of study in Europe had brought him into contact with the painters of the Barbizon School, especially Camille Corot and Theodore Rousseau, whose belief in direct observation of atmosphere and transient light reshaped his practice. Where his earlier canvases followed the Hudson River School in precise topographical description, works of the late 1850s and early 1860s like Clearing Up show Inness moving toward a freer, more emotionally responsive handling of the American countryside. The painting belongs to a group of New England storm-clearing subjects that collectors and critics of the period prized for their balance between observed meteorological fact and felt mood: the storm is not theatrical ruin but ordinary weather, and the light returning across the valley floor carries the specific quality of a New England autumn afternoon. Inness would later develop this atmospheric approach further into the Tonalist dissolved harmonics of his final decade, making works like this one a crucial hinge in American landscape painting between the luminist clarity of his contemporaries and the near-monochromatic reverie of his late style.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas preserves the full tonal range of this painting with a fidelity that mass-produced prints cannot achieve. The subtle gradient from the storm-shadow violet-gray of the upper left sky to the broken cream light of the clearing centre requires continuous tonal resolution across a wide dynamic range; our twelve-colour pigment system holds both extremes without the compressed midtones that degrade on poster-quality stock. The varied surface of Inness's brushwork, from the dragged, textured strokes describing lichen-covered stone in the foreground to the feathered wet-into-wet passages of the cloud mass, are rendered at a resolution that rewards close inspection. Our source material has been digitally restored from high-resolution museum scans, recovering the warm ochre and amber of the foliage and the cool silvery notes in the stream that fade to mud in lower-grade reproductions. Each print ships in an ornate composite frame in a Gold finish, ready to hang.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/george_inness__clearing_up__medium__dark_bronze.jpg?v=1792366136
