fra_angelico__annunciation
Annunciation – Fra Angelico, 1438-1445

Annunciation by Fra Angelico, 1438-1445

Framed Canvas Art

Fra Angelico's Annunciation presents the moment the Archangel Gabriel appears before the Virgin Mary to announce that she will bear the Son of God. The scene unfolds beneath a graceful arcade of slender Corinthian columns, where Gabriel kneels in a rose-pink robe, his layered wings rendered in warm amber and deep brick-red, crossed hands pressed to his chest in reverent submission. Mary sits to the right on a low wooden bench, draped in a deep cobalt-blue mantle over a pale ivory tunic, her own arms folded inward as she receives the divine message with composed humility. Beyond the colonnade, a garden of deep green foliage glows under soft ambient light, while the interior loggia itself is rendered in warm ochre and buff plaster tones. The composition is notable for its isocephaly, the two figures held at the same eye level, and for the tender reciprocity of their gazes across the intervening arch. Light falls evenly and without drama, a hallmark of Fra Angelico's Early Renaissance devotional manner: clarity of form in service of spiritual transparency.

This fresco was painted for the dormitory corridor of the Convent of San Marco in Florence, the Dominican friary rebuilt by Michelozzo for Cosimo de' Medici and decorated throughout by Fra Giovanni da Fiesole, known to history as Fra Angelico (c. 1395-1455). The San Marco Annunciation is among the most celebrated of the approximately fifty frescoes he executed there between roughly 1438 and 1445, works intended not as public altarpieces but as private aids to monastic contemplation. The architecture in the painting is not merely setting: the arched loggia mirrors the actual arcade of the convent, drawing the friar who paused here into the sacred space itself. Giorgio Vasari wrote that Fra Angelico never lifted his brush without first praying, and the serene, untheatrical quality of the work bears that account out. The fresco is today preserved in situ at the Museo di San Marco, Florence, where it remains one of the defining images of Early Renaissance painting and of Christian devotional art at large.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas captures the particular tonal delicacy that makes this work so difficult to reproduce faithfully: the subtle gradation from the cool white of the arcade vaulting into the warm ochre of the plaster loggia floor, and the modulated transition within Gabriel's wing feathers from deep terracotta at the primary shafts to pale amber at the tips. Mass-produced poster prints collapse those passages into flat uniform fields, losing the fresco's characteristic shallow relief of colour. Our source image has been digitally restored from high-resolution museum scans, recovering the exact cobalt of Mary's mantle and the soft rose of Gabriel's robe as they read on the original wall, well before the colour flattening that compromises most commercial reproductions. The ornate composite frame, available in a refined gold finish, completes the presentation without competing with the painting's own luminous restraint.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/fra_angelico__annunciation__large__dark_bronze.jpg?v=1793589450
