cesare_tallone__roman_forum
Roman Forum – Cesare Tallone, 1880s

Roman Forum by Cesare Tallone, 1880s

Framed Canvas Art

Standing at the edge of the ancient precinct, Tallone looks northward along the broad paved Sacred Way, its worn stone slabs catching a pale, diffuse light that filters through a partly clouded Roman sky. At left, the surviving columns of the Temple of Saturn rise in close-up, their weathered travertine faces rendered in layered warm greys, ochres and browns with a loose, painterly confidence that reads the erosion of centuries without nostalgia. The middle distance opens to rubble and broken plinths, and on the far right the Arch of Titus is faintly legible against a luminous blue-grey sky. Tallone's brushwork is brisk and notational throughout: the pavement stones are laid in broad, slightly dragged strokes; the column shafts are built up in vertical passages of beige, grey and umber that suggest mass without belaboring surface detail. The overall tonal range is low and earthy, anchored in warm browns and cool stone greys, with the sky providing the only sustained lighter note. This is a picture that treats Rome's ruins not as picturesque backdrop but as a constructed environment still pressing on the present.

Cesare Tallone was born in Savona in 1853 and trained at the Brera Academy in Milan before traveling to Rome, where he absorbed the influence of the scapigliatura movement and the broader Italian engagement with Realism and plein-air painting then reshaping European practice. His Roman views belong to a body of work produced in the 1880s when the newly unified Italian state was conducting large-scale excavations of the Forum, stripping away medieval and Renaissance accretions to expose the ancient ground level. That archaeological moment gave painters like Tallone an unusually raw subject: a site simultaneously ancient and freshly uncovered, its stones still bearing the marks of the pick. The composition here owes something to the vedute tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries, but the execution is wholly of its moment: no polished finish, no framing repoussoir device, just a painter working quickly in front of the thing itself. Tallone would go on to become one of Milan's most celebrated portraitists, a professor at the Brera and a figurehead of the Lombard art world, but these earlier Roman landscapes show a directness and informality that his later society portraits would set aside.

Our archival giclee process on museum-grade cotton canvas is particularly well suited to this painting's tonal subtlety. The press captures the delicate gradations between the warm ochre passages in the column bases and the cooler, near-neutral greys of the upper shafts, transitions that collapse entirely in flat reproduction. The slightly dragged, textured brushwork across the foreground pavement retains its directional character, distinguishing the broad strokes that describe stone from the shorter, lighter marks that build the sky. The full dynamic range from the deep shadow recesses between the columns to the pale luminosity of the open sky above the Arch is recovered from high-resolution museum scans, correcting the colour shift and midtone compression that degrade poster-quality prints. The ornate composite frame, available in Gold, Silver or Bronze finish, adds a presentation appropriate to a work of this historical and artistic weight.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/cesare_tallone__roman_forum__large__gold.jpg?v=1791658967
