amedeo_modigliani__woman_with_red_hair
Woman With Red Hair – Amedeo Modigliani, 1917

Woman With Red Hair by Amedeo Modigliani, 1917

Framed Canvas Art

Modigliani's Woman With Red Hair presents a seated female figure against a muted blue-green ground, her copper-red curls forming the painting's most chromatic accent against the deep, near-black of her dress. The face is rendered in Modigliani's unmistakable manner: an elongated oval, almond-shaped eyes left without pupils, a long straight nose, and lips parted in a barely perceptible suggestion of self-possession. The figure's right arm rests casually over the back of a red-brown wooden chair, and her posture carries a quality of informal dignity rather than studied poise. The palette is restrained: soft terracotta in the flesh tones, the dark dress anchoring the lower half of the canvas, and a warm ocher blush across the cheeks. The brushwork is smooth and confident, volume built through tonal modulation rather than visible stroke, while the contour line retains the graphic clarity that connects Modigliani to Modernism and, behind it, to Cézanne's structured flatness and the influence of African sculpture on Parisian studios.

Painted in Paris in 1917, this canvas belongs to the most concentrated period of Modigliani's portrait production. By this point he had largely abandoned sculpture, which had damaged his already fragile lungs, and had committed fully to painting under the encouragement of the dealer Paul Guillaume and, later, Léopold Zborowski. The sitters of these years, often anonymous models from his Montparnasse circle, became vehicles for a coherent formal language: the stretched neck, the tilted head, the masklike face that critics have connected both to African and Oceanic art he had studied at the Trocadéro and to the elongated saints of Italian Mannerism, particularly the work of Modigliani's compatriot Pontormo. The red-haired model recurs in at least one other canvas from roughly the same period, suggesting she was a regular presence in the studio. Modigliani's portraits were met with scandal at his only solo exhibition in December 1917, when the Paris police shut down the Berthe Weill gallery for displaying nudes in the window; the clothed portraits shown alongside them, works very much like this one, were consequently overshadowed in the contemporary record, though they have since come to be regarded as the core of his achievement. He died in January 1920 at thirty-five, and the paintings that had sold for almost nothing in his lifetime entered major collections within a generation.

Canvas Classics reproduces Woman With Red Hair from a high-resolution museum scan, digitally restored to recover the precise gradations that separate the warm terracotta of the flesh from the cooler gray-green of the ground, a transition that compressed or posterized reproductions flatten into a single muddy passage. The subtle modeling across the cheek and jaw, where Modigliani moves from a deep reddish shadow into a pale blush highlight with no visible brushstroke to interrupt the surface, is preserved in full tonal depth by our archival pigment inks on museum-grade cotton canvas. The rich near-black of the dress retains its internal variation, avoiding the blocked-out darkness that cheaper printing processes produce. Our ornate composite frame, available in your choice of finish, completes the presentation without competing with Modigliani's spare, commanding palette.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0762/8606/6923/files/amedeo_modigliani__woman_with_red_hair__estate__gold.jpg?v=1792947965
